The sun finally shone the first Sunday of my trip. Off to Newport to see Jan play football before seeing something of the area.
Met some very nice people in his team and enjoyed sitting in the sun wondering if I really was opposite the famous Newport yacht area and watching a game of football – in the USA!
Later we walked around parts of the town around the harbour area with stops for coffee and refreshments. I really enjoyed the day and finally felt I had landed in the country.
We ended up in the real area of America’s Old Rich on the other side of Newport as it looks towards the Atlantic. Here the really rich of America’s Industrial Revolution built their mansions and villas to enjoy the summer air – when not yachting on the inner side of Newport.
I could not resist having a photo taken of me at the huge mansion built by the Astor family and which featured in the film ‘The Great Gadsby’. Na ja, those were the days – ‘anyone for tennis and a pink gin?’
